Roughcasting is one of Scotland’s most traditional and effective ways to protect a building’s exterior from the unpredictable Scottish weather.

It’s more than just a pretty finish to your home’s exterior, it also shields your home from driving rain, prevents dampness from penetrating the wall and adds a layer of insulation too. Available in a range of colours and finishes so your home can look great and be protected.

We all know how unpredictable Scottish weather can be, in particular in our island & coastal communities. One minute it’s glorious sunshine, next thing it’s absolutely pouring down and freezing cold. By adding roughcast to the exterior of your home, you are adding a barrier that protects your home from damp, mould, structural damage and more.

Along with keeping your home’s exterior safe, roughcasting also adds a layer of insulation to your home helping you to keep heat in during the colder months helping you to save on energy bills.

What Form Of Roughcasting Is Right For Me?

There are 3 types of roughcasting:

  • Wet dash â€“ the traditional thrown finish for a textured, weatherproof coat
  • Dry dash â€“ stone chips or pebbles pressed into a wet base for a classic pebbled look
  • Smooth coat â€“ a cleaner, more even render finish

Wet dash is usually considered the best for weather resistance, particularly in coastal areas where they are more likely to be exposed to driving rain. Wet dash also has a more traditional textured look which tends to suit older character properties. Dry dash is highly durable with a tough pebbled surface. It has a classic Scottish look – perfect for period and traditional-style homes. And then there is smooth coat which has a clear and modern finish – better suited for newer homes. It’s much easier to keep clean due it’s smoother texture.
